How to activate exim stage 1 debug mode ?

Postby alainmicro » Mon Feb 20, 2017 7:50 pm

Bonjour.

Since several days I have a trouble with a server which try to connect to my mailcleaner server.

I have always the same error at exim stage 1 :

unexpected disconnection while reading SMTP command from xxx.com [w.x.y.z]

I have done some tcpdump -A -v port 25 > textfile and some tshark -w exim.pcap -i eth0

I see some SMTP commands like :
Hello xxx.com [w.x.y.z]
250-SIZE 52428800
250-8BITMIME
250-PIPELINING
250-AUTH PLAIN LOGIN
250 HELP
Then
MAIL FROM:<yyyy@xxx.com>
RCPT TO:<oneofmyusers@zzz.org>

And after some time it seems that I have a timeout.

When I redirect incomming mails to a simple smtp server (Mercury 32 for Windows) for testing this smtp server receives emails from the server without problem.

I would like to know how to activate debug mode for exim stage 1 ?

I have tried to put -d inside several files but I don't find the way to make mailcleaner works with debug mode at exim stage 1 and how to see the result inside a log or a text file.

Thanks in advance.
Regards.

Are you using Address Verification in your domain settings? It sounds like that is timing out. If it does all mail will be rejected.

Bonjour.

Yes I use smtp callout connector.

smtp check works well, I have this "unexpected disconnection" every times with the same server. Only one server but it's a big customer.

Even when the smtp check is from the cache and the night when there is no Internet traffic.

There is a way to have more datas with debug mode ?

Dear alainmicro,

First of all, you have some exim logs at: /var/mailcleaner/log/exim_stage1/mainlog (exim_stage1 as the Incoming).

For debugging your exim_stage1, you can:

  • simulate an exim session by running this command (and using the classic SMTP commands):

    Code: Select all

    /opt/exim4/bin/exim -C /usr/mailcleaner/etc/exim/exim_stage1.conf -bhc sender_ip_for_test
  • also you can add the debug option directly at the exim startup. For this, you have to modify the /usr/mailcleaner/etc/init.d/exim_stage1 starter and add at the end of line 75:

    Code: Select all

     -d+all

You should have something like this:

    Code: Select all

    start-stop-daemon --start --pidfile $PIDFILE --exec $DAEMON -- -C $CONFIGFILE -bd -q$QUEUETIME -d+all

After that, just restart exim and you should see in live the debug informations:

    Code: Select all

    /usr/mailcleaner/etc/init.d/exim_stage1 restart

Bonjour.

Thank you for the answer.

Exim session simulation gives me a normal behavior and I've also remove smtp callout.

I've enabled live debug with -d+all but is it possible to write debug live to a file because live debug is written too fast ?

Regards.

Bonjour.

After a lot of searches I've solved this problem with this link : viewtopic.php?t=2095

DNS problem.

Maybe someone else would interested by that.
