how to configure SMTP authentication ?

Postby ics » Thu Aug 06, 2015 11:42 am

Hi,

I want to authenticate one specific user for SMTP email sending (basic authentication).
- I created the user in local database (management/users)
- I configured Users authentication in the domain settings

- I enabled "allow users to use SMTP authentication" in the Outgoing relay setting of the domain.

But it doesn't work, I get the following error:

Code: Select all

Incoming MTA stage:    2015-08-06 12:30:14 fixed_login authenticator failed for xxxxxx.xxxx.xxxx [192.168.xxx.xxx]: 535 Incorrect authentication data (set_id=xxxxxxx@xxxxxx.com)

What am I missing ?

Hello,
With a local configuration, you have to fill the password field in Management -> User -> YourUser -> Authentication
Local means you manage it yourself so they re not linked to local account , thing you could think at first.

Thanks for the answer.
Unfortunately I've already done that. I should have mentioned that I also configured the password after having created the user.

Try the authentication with username only.

The username only doesn't work either. And I have to set a password for the user otherwise it will be generated automaticaly anyway.

Any other idea ? Has anyone managed to get smtp auth working ?

I got it working.
First delete your current users under management --> users.
Use the following settings in the domain:
user authentication - local, add the domain using @ character, fetch local database
outgoing relay - Allow users to use SMTP authentication

After you configured this recreate users under management --> users.

If it's still not working, send a screenshot of all settings in the domain.

Thanx for that.

Well, if some newbies (like me) want to authenticate the users login in mailcleaner against their own smtp, imap or POP, so the configuration is as follows:
Authentication type: imap (or smtp,pop)
Authentication server: Ip-address of YOUR mailserver, the one, where you receive your emails with outlook, thunderbird, etc
Use SSL: yes, if SSL IS needed, or no, if not

Username modifier: add the domain using @ character
Address lookup: fetch address(es) in local database

Test username: <first part of emailaddress without @...>
Test password: <password of the specified emailaddress>

AND don't do the same mistake like me (me silly!!):
If a USER logins, so the webaddress is http://<yourmailcleaneradress/login.php
If an ADMIN logins, so the webaddress is http://<yourmailcleaneradress/admin/

Greetz... :)
